Microsoft released the beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 to MSDN subscribers on Tuesday. In a few postings found on Microsoft Blogs they indicated that the service will not only update Vista, but will also work with 2008 Server.

I decided to take a peek at my MSDN account, and indeed it is available for download:

By tomorrow, anyone will be able to download and test the service pack by signing up at the Microsoft customer preview program (CPP).

In addition to fixing some bugs, a few additional features will be available:

-Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.

-Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology

-Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration

-Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones

Notice how I put the last one in bold. This is an interesting improvement to this file system. exFAT is used for flash drives, and is only supported in Vista SP1. I wonder if they have any other features in mind.

I am downloading it right now, and I will tell you what I find.

Security researchers at Microsoft last week warned of a significant increase in exploits of the SMB flaw in Windows. The flaw was patched with an emergency fix last month. Microsoft again urged users to install the patch if they have not already done so.

The patch can be found here

Microsoft’s malware protection center said an increase in attacks began last weekend. This is right in line with the rumor I posted a while back that indicated this would happen near the Thanksgiving holiday.

The latest maleware to exploit this flaw is called “Conficker.a” by Microsoft, and “Downloadup” by Symantec. It exploits the flaw in SMB and then installs itself on the target machine. The purpose of the maleware is not clear yet, but it has been studied by security researchers. This is what they have found so far

-It Avoids Ukrainian IP address ranges. This possibly means it was created by someone in this area of the world. It is a common tactic used to reduce the chance of action by local authorities.

-Even more interesting, the worm patches the flaw. This is done so other viruses cannot take the place of it.

-The worm resets the machine’s restore point. Which will make it difficult or impossible to “roll back” windows from a pre-infection state.

It is clear that if you have installed the patch, you are safe. If you have not installed the patch yet I would suggest getting to it as fast as you can. In addition, as a precaution you should always make sure that your SMB services are not available from the public Internet - you never know what other flaws are still hiding in this very old part of Windows.

I am using the Thanksgiving holiday as a perfect time to upgrade our internal servers. I had already installed 2008 at our main site, and the backup site. Since everything was already running I could do it from home using our IntelliAdmin Remote Control.

Within a few hours I got all the files in place, all of my accounts created and I was just about finished. I remembered that I needed to activate it:

It didn’t activate, and came back with this error: “A problem occurred when windows tried to activate. Error Code: 0×8007232B”

Hmm.

Clicked on more information, and I was even more confused. It said: “DNS name does not exist”.

Very strange. I tested all of my DNS settings to make sure they were correct. Tried again, same error. Did a reboot. Same. Time for research.

After some searching on Google I found that this problem can be resolved by re-entering the license key. Ugg. Usually you need to do a in-place upgrade to update the key. Not in 2008. You can easily change the key by going into the control panel, and then clicking on system.

A system window will pop up, and towards the bottom it has a “Change Product Key” option:

So I clicked on it, and updated the key:

After I clicked next, it successfully activated.

I would hope that Microsoft fixes this soon :/

Now I can relax and watch the rest of the Thanksgiving parade.

I lied. This is not the 5 sins of Windows 7, but the 5 sins of Vista undone. When Vista was first released I wrote an article titled “The 5 Sins of Vista” Each Sin was a bug or issue with Vista that I thought needed to be fixed.

Lets look at all 5 of them

1. The new file browsing is broken
2. The new start menu sucks
3. Windows Networking is a Mess
4. Windows search is broken
5. Windows copying is not improved

A friend of mine attended the Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference, and he finally made his way back here. I asked him if I could take his copy of Windows 7 for a spin, and here is what I found.

File Browsing is greatly improved

The new file browsing has fixed many of the bad design decisions found in Vista. Navigating folders in a file dialog is a breeze. Just take a look at this:

After using it for a day I didn’t find myself wanting to pound the keyboard because I navigated to the wrong spot. It seemed to work “Naturally”

Another one of my peeves was this ridiculous situation where you would click on the drop down menu in notepad (And lots of other apps) - and a list of websites would appear! This is still happens in Vista SP1. You click the website and it gives you a funky error. If you look at when I clicked it in Windows 7, it has a recent folder I visited. Perfect! That is what I expect.

The new start menu

Not much to say here, since I did not get a first-hand look at the new start menu (Only those who were at the conference could see it). One item that I did notice is a small bar on the right hand side of the time:

What do you think that does? It has the same function as the “Show Desktop” icon. The Apple-esque design of this is making me giddy.

Windows Networking

When I first experienced the networking center within Vista I kept thinking they would make it better before they released the final version. No luck there. I was pleased to see the new layout in the Networking Center. I found it to be much easier to Navigate. The forms are not as busy, and it flows naturally

Windows Search

It returns results more quickly, and has a snappier response. In addition it has some cool features. One of them is shown below. When you type in a search term it immediately starts filling the list with matches (Like in Vista), but the new search will start to highlight the matching string within the word. I found it made it much easier to identify the item I was looking for:

Windows File Copying

Wow. Let me say that again WOW!. They have done a great job here. This is an improvement that has been needed for years. Right now, in Vista, if I copy to a network share it may never finish. It could lock up my machine. It could cause it to blue-screen.

I decided to try to copy a 1GB file from my parents house (This is a very slow and unreliable VPN connection) to see what would happen.

As you can see it says 5 hours. I put the Windows 7 VM in the corner, and let it do its thing. Surprisingly 5 hours later it copied the file! And it was not corrupted.

Damn. I still can’t believe it. I would have expected this in Windows 2000…but better late than never.

I had an even more devious idea. Start a copy, and then pull out the network cable…what would happen? In Vista it would probably lock up explorer and then I would have to reboot or end the task. In Windows 7 it prompted me almost right away:

I pressed “Try Again”, and the copy finished with no issues. I tried this a few more times. It worked perfectly. This single problem has made me curse Vista every day I use it. I know many people do not have bad/slow links to network shares…but for those of us who do…this is fantastic.

UAC Prompts

I will add a bonus one in here…since I never talked about it in the “5 sins”. The UAC prompt has been improved too. One huge annoyance - copy a file to a system area and you are prompted probably 3 or 4 times with different questions. This has been reduced to 1 prompt:

In addition, the prompt for running programs that require admin access uses a different method to display the prompt. In Vista, Windows will switch your desktop. From a users perspective you generally are not aware this is happening. But - I bet you have seen the side effect of this. Ever have a computer that completely blacks out for a few seconds while it thinks about the UAC prompt? Well that is because it is switching desktops. At least in the version of Windows 7 I tested, it does not switch desktops. This makes the experience a lot smoother:

All in all this looks like a ray of sunshine on the Windows world. Vista is starting to look like the Windows ME of the 21st century. I believe this Windows 7 Build has debugging code in it, so when the final release comes out it will only get faster. If they sold it tomorrow I would be in line to buy it.

It has been a busy week for email. Received another good question yesterday:

Saw an article you wrote on IntelliAdmin and wanted to ask a follow-up. I have a set of 12 local Windows XP machines and I’d like them all to use the same set of Favorites (without users being able to add or subtract sites). I have a small server running Windows 2000 and (ideally) I’d like for each machine to have to reach out to that server IP to obtain the current IE favorites…. Not only would that give me some static control over the current Favorites, but it would also allow me to update that list in one location (without having to go in and log-in as an admin to each machine and import that folder each time I have to make a change).

From your article, it would almost seem possible to do this, but… Or am I making things too difficult? Is there an easier way for this newbie to do it?

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance you could give…

-Storms

I actually have a similar situation at home…and while I could go through the registry and update each of my computers…well that is too much of a pain…so I decided to throw an app together that will do it for me.

I will call it “Redirect Favorites 1.0″. (I know, I know, what an original name) Its operation is simple. Launch the application, and set the folder you would like your favorites to be pulled from. In this case it would be a network share:

Make your change, and click apply. Now simply close all open windows of IE. When you re-open Internet Explorer it will be pointing to your new folder.

One thing I have not tested - what will happen if many different users are using the same favorites folder. You will need to experiment and see if IE complains. Either way, if you do run into problems you can simply run the program and reset it back to the default setting.

But for now I can easily throw this app on my USB flash drive and set all my computers at home to point to the same spot. That way I can get to my good list of bookmarks

Download it from here - as always no spyware, adware - only freeware goodness.

Last weekend I was digging through the attic to get Christmas lights. It was time to start fixing the ones that are not working anymore. In the container of lights I have these boxes that plug into the wall and allow me to turn the lights on and off with a remote control. On the outside of the box it says “Plug-N-Power”. I think I bought them over 20 years ago.

Plug-N-Power is still around today. You might know it as X-10. After all of these years they use the same protocol that works over your house wiring.

I always get a chuckle when I look at those boxes because I can remember when I built a circuit from a Radio Electronics magazine. It was supposed to send Plug-N-Power signals over house wiring from a Commodore 64. I wanted to build it so I could create a program on my Commodore to control my parents Christmas lights.

It was a dicey circuit since it was mixing 110 AC with the “user port” of the Commodore. I started working on it - I think around October of - hmm I think it was 1989. It took me until right before Thanksgiving to finish it. I was in a hurry, and I was busy with school at the time too. The production quality of the hardware…well…lets say it was pretty bad - and I knew it.

I had this rule with any 110 circuit I built. I would use a long extension cord, and hide inside the house - flip a switch to turn it on. That way if something went really bad, I was protected from shrapnel if the thing blew up.

Good thing I did it this time. I rolled out the extension cord, and plugged everything in (With the switch off of course). Got inside the house, and got my older brother in the room so he could watch too. I was hoping that when I flipped the switch nothing would happen.

I was wrong - flipped the switch and a huge arc came out of the circuit board, and then a giant bang….a ring of smoke went up into the air. My brother and I couldn’t stop laughing. When I looked at the board, half of the board was missing. I found resistors, capacitors all over the driveway in pieces.

Even though I was laughing I was too scared to try again. I figured if I was able to to get the thing working I would be afraid to leave it running in my parents house.

Back to today. I have been thinking hard about how the iPhone fits into our product line, and possibly creating some remote administration apps for it. Not because I like the iPhone, but we have actually received quite a few emails requesting different types of remote admin iPhone apps.

When I learn a new platform or language I like to come up with a fun project that is quick to build, but helps me learn the concepts required. I started thinking…hmm…I wonder what type of Plug-N-Power stuff is out there now…wonder how hard would it be to get my iPhone to send signals to them - and control my Christmas lights with it.

I did my research, and I came up with a plan. For it to work I would need to build three things:

1. A PHP script that would work with MySQL to keep track of the Christmas lights (Like Tree, Santa out Front, etc), and their status (On or Off).

2. A computer that would send the signals to the X 10 devices by polling PHP script on a web server, and take action on the XML generated by the php script.

3. An iPhone application that would send data to the PHP application, and be able to render the light descriptions, and allow me to change status by clicking an on or off button.

(The A-Team theme song was going off in my head at the time…and I could hear Hannibal saying, “I love it when a plan comes together”)

The first part was easy. PHP is a breeze to use, and I was able to put something together in an hour.

The second part was a little more difficult. I found that to do this I needed something called “FireCracker” from X10. It cost me $39, and came with a remote control, and another lamp module - a pretty good deal. Here is what it looks like:

FireCracker X10 Serial Interface

Along with the lamp module, wireless receiver, and my iPhone:

The FireCracker device plugs into your serial port. It in turn sends wireless signals to an X10 wireless receiver (Included in the $39 deal) that plugs into the wall…and it actually sends the signals to the X10 device. A side note here - Notice how they are not allowing 110AC to come near the computer!?! Smart idea!

Normally you use an X10 App to control your devices and lights, but I wanted to control this with my own code. After searching I found a free API that let me turn a light on or off using a simple C++ call. After a few hours of coding I had an application that would poll my webserver. The webserver in turn would return an XML feed generated by my PHP script, and then finally my C++ app would turn a light on or off based on what was in the XML feed. After a few tries I got it to work. I did some testing by manually updating the database on the webserver…lights on….lights off…beautiful!

Now to the tough part. Writing the app on the iPhone. I had never written anything for the Mac or the iPhone. I have peeked at Cocoa (The main language used to develop for the iPhone & Mac)…and it is a very strange looking language. I went to the bookstore and got every book I could find on it. After a few days of reading and experimenting I was ready to write my app. I hated Cocoa at first, but after I was finished I was jealous that I couldn’t use this beautiful dev environment to create windows apps.

About 2 days later I had a fairly functional application. A couple more days and I had it nice and polished with an icon and all.

Here is the icon on my home screen of my iPhone (It is the blue Christmas light..sorry for the bad shots)

Once you click on the blue Christmas light, it hits a webserver that pulls down XML and fills out a list of lights to control:

iPhone Remote Control Main Screen

I have my wreath on the door, the garland on the stairs, Santa out front…and our tree on the list. To turn one of them on or off, you simply make your selection:

iPhone Remote Control Christmas Lights Off

As you can see my tree is turned off. I press the button, and boom

iPhone Remote Control Christmas Lights On

And now the tree is lit.

Pictures can’t show it all…so I took a video too:

There is some delay between the time I turn off the lights, but that is because I am polling every 15 seconds. If I spent more time on it I could create a solution that was almost instant.

Now I will have something really cool to talk about at Thanksgiving dinner.

Hi, I have a 10-year-old daughter, and I’m concerned that she might be doing some shady things on her computer. I was told about “Intelliadmin” to discreetly watch her computer from my own on the same network. Is this something you can provide? Please give me some information… and keep in mind that I’m not a tech whiz!

While it is true that our remote control product could be used for this purpose, I don’t recommend it. First of all the mouse will flicker with some video cards. Why? Because we need to capture alpha-blended windows in applications like Outlook. A side effect of this is the flicker. I don’t think it would take very long to figure out that someone was on their computer with that going on. Secondly, it would be overkill, since many of the features in our product are targeted at IT administrators - and using it in this way could be replaced by free alternatives.

So what is a good program to use? A while a go a friend of mine needed to do exactly what Mike asked, and after my research I came up with a program called Spector Pro from http://www.spectorsoft.com/ (No they are not paying me to write this article). I was very impressed with what it could do.

Here are a some of the things it can monitor

-Actual records of screen movements during the entire time of usage (It is very efficient with this since it only records when the user is moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard)

-Chat/IM Activity

-All Keystrokes typed

-MySpace / Facebook activity

-Online searches

-Email Activity

-Program Activity

-Websites Visited

The best part? You can install the application, and then put it into stealth mode. In stealth mode it is very difficult for someone to find out that it is running . You are given a magic key combination that will bring the program back…and you can then replay the entire recorded session.

If you need to monitor computer usage, or know someone who does, I definitely recommend this program. It is a well designed product.

Back in 2007 I wrote an article on how to backup your auto-complete data in Outlook. This tip is for Outlook 2003 - even though I don’t mention it - it works for Outlook 2007 too.

What is Auto-Complete? When you start typing out an email address, outlook will automatically start filling it out for you.

I showed you how to delete these items, but what if you wanted to add items to the auto complete list? Well…I have found just the tool to do that. It is called NK2View from NirSoft.

If you download a copy of it, and run it will automatically find the N2K file for the current profile. See my old article on how to find this file yourself - you might want to do this before using this tool so you can back it up. After running the program, you will see items in the auto-complete database (N2K file).

You can delete items, edit them, export to HTML, and the best part…you can import contacts from your Outlook contact list:

This can be a life saver. If a machine blows up, and you want to restore a decent auto-complete list for the user, you can use it to import their contact list from Exchange.

All in all it is a great tool. Best of all it is free. Make sure you backup your N2K file before saving, since you never know what crazy things Microsoft will do with future patches to break a great tool like this.

I recently received an email:

Dear Steve,

I was going through google search and I came across your script. Please, how do I reset the network users home page to a particular website and make it permanent such that they would not change it?

Thanks.

Normally the answer would be to use group policy. But I have a few machines that are not even a member of a domain - and I would like to do exactly what he asked. Since group policy is simply registry settings, we can make this change by hand. (As always if you are not comfortable with the registry then don’t do any of this. A screw up in the registry can screw up your computer so bad it won’t boot anymore)

The original key to set the home page is located under:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page

If we simply extrapolate we can create a Policy key in the same location (You can do it under HKCU for just the current user, or HKLM for the whole machine)

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page

You will need to create some of the keys along the way. See my screen shot below. This is what it looks like after I have created the keys

If a picture is not a 1000 words for you, then do this:

Open regedit. Drill down to HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft

If an “Internet Explorer” key does not exist, then create one.

If under that a “Main” key does not exit, then create one.

Then in Main, you simply create a new string value, and name it “Start Page” The value you place in here will be the new home page you want to force IE to visit:

Now, when the user changes the home page - it simply ignores it (I have only tested this on IE 7…someone will have to tell me if it works on IE 6). Not very user friendly. Don’t forget that you set this up…or you might not know why every time you try to change the home page it switches back.

This seems like it should be in our Tweek IE utility…I will have to see what I can do.

Earlier this week I wrote about how AVG prompted for the removal of a critical windows file.

On Thrusday, AVG announced: “As a follow-up to the rapid distribution of recovery instructions and repair CDs, AVG Technologies is offering all affected users a free license or license extension”

The free subscription would cover AVG 8.0, a free upgrade from 7.5, and also a free upgrade from the free version.

Now the interesting part is AVG has said that not all users would receive the free upgrade - only affected users.

No word yet as to how they can tell if you have been “affected” by the issue. The company said it will notify customers that were affected by the problem starting on November 24th, and let them know how to receive an upgrade.

This makes me ask a few questions. First, how can they determine which customers are affected. Secondly how can they tie that to contact information?

I have been digging up as much information possible about Windows 2008 R2. Mostly because I fear that Windows 7, and 2008 R2 will be another smack down for us in regard to application compatibility.

According to a Windows 2008 server blog:

WoW64 support for 32bit applications is now an optional feature in Server Core R2 and is not installed by default. This enables you to further reduce the footprint of Server Core if you remove it from the image. I’m interested in hearing feedback on our decision to not install this by default – is this a good idea, or will you always need to install this because you have 32bit code you need to run?

Hmm. This is a post referring to the Core version of Server 2008, but still it is an interesting development that you can totally turn off 32 bit support. The disturbing part from a compatibility standpoint is that it is not installed by default. Even our 64 bit compatible remote control has some elements that are 32 bit only. With no way to port these to 64 bit it immediately would render our products, and many others useless - at least until the customer added 32 bit support again.

I would hope that Microsoft would wait until R3, or Windows 8 to default to 64 bit only. Otherwise we will quickly need to update our Agent Settings application :/

In their quest to compete with the iPhone, Research In Motion has developed the BlackBerry storm. For quite some time BlackBerry has had a grip on the corporate environment. That was starting to fall apart with the iPhone.

We can attest to that from our own informal sampling here. For a long time we would only get requests to create BlackBerry compatible applications. These days it is about 50/50 with the iPhone and BlackBerry.

The new interfaces sports a few unique features that may please iPhone haters. The screen actually indents when you press it - so when you type on the visual keyboard it actually feels like you are pressing buttons. It also has excellent integration with Microsoft Exchange - something the iPhone has, but it is still far from what it should be.

Still, the look is missing that something special that the iPhone has:

And it is lacking in specifications. The stock $199 model (That Verizon will subsidize) Comes with only a 1GB memory card. In contrast the $199 iPhone comes with 8GB.

Still I think in the corporate environment the BlackBerry will win over for now - it has some of the best tools for controlling and monitoring use.

We are starting to toy around with a few test apps on the iPhone here…maybe we will get one of these also and see what type of apps we can come up with

Microsoft has recently released patch MS08-068 - Another SMB remote code execution bug. It allows anyone who exploits the flaw to take control of that computer. If you have not gotten the patch yet - I would get it as soon as you can.

The disturbing part is that Microsoft knew about this flaw as far back as 2001. According to Microsoft, they held back on releasing a fix because it would immediately break many applications that require SMB signing. For example, on the MSRC blog, a Microsoft employee states:

…the impact would have been to render many (or nearly all) customers network-based applications then inoperable. For instance, an Outlook 2000 client wouldnt have been able to communicate with an Exchange 2000 server. We did say that customers who were concerned about this issue could use SMB signing as an effective mitigation…

I could buy that. IF IT ONLY AFFECTED WINDOWS XP. But the bug in question also affects Vista, 2008, and 64 bit releases. Many applications were simply broken with the release of Vista. Why not just allow them to break and keep them secure? And why does it take 7 years to figure out this application compatible work around?

In our remote programs, like remote reboot, or remote desktop enabler, we need to use 4 different methods to authenticate via SMB with a remote host…to cover all of the versions of Windows. Now I can understand why this is the case! Because the SMB server in windows is a spaghetti code mess that probably has 10 more security holes the hackers already know about, Microsoft knows about, but still has not found a fix for them yet!

Sorry for the rant, but if you do have an internet facing machine I suggest disabling file and printer sharing, and make double sure these ports are firewalled.

VMWare’s competitor, Parallels, has just released 4.0 of their Virtualization product. It is a Mac only product, but many Windows users (like me) only use Windows in a virtual environment on a Mac.

From Parallels, here is a list of new features:

Redesigned User Interface - provides quick access to all virtual machines. Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac also improves upon earlier iterations by introducing support for video boosters such as DirectX 9, DirectX Pixel Shader 2.0, and OpenGL 2.0.

New Virtualization Engine - Called the adaptive hypervisor, it consumes 15 to 30 percent less resources than previous versions. “The adaptive hypervisor gives our users the resources they need on the fly,” said John Hermes, chief technology officer at Oklahoma Christian University.

Power-saver Feature - it reduces the platform’s drain on battery life by up to 20 percent. The new platform is also specifically designed to take advantage of the capabilities inherent in the latest dual-core and quad-core processors from Intel.

Security and backup - A complete set of antivirus, firewall, scanner, recovery, filtering and identity protection capabilities powered by Kaspersky Internet Security. Even better, the new platform now embraces the latest backup and restore capabilities from disk-management software provider Acronis.

I am downloading a trial right now to take it for a spin…here is the download location for those who are interested:

Yesterday the AVG virus scanner accidentally marked User32.dll as a virus.

Since this is a critical windows component, it has caused many machines not to boot. Two of our XP machines experienced the issue here, but it has not seemed to have bothered our Vista installs.

This happened because their scanner contained an incorrect virus signature that led it to think that user32.dll contained the Trojan Horse PSW.Banker4.APSA. AVG then prompted to delete the file (Heal). Luckily we did not do that

If you are running AVG, and you deleted the file, you will need to run system recovery or boot from a CD like BartsPE and restore it from c:\windows\system32\dllcache

Within a few hours AVG updated their signatures, and it no longer has the incorrect entry.

Microsoft has announced some of the new features of 2008 R2, a server update that will coincide with the release of Windows 7. Starting with R2 all server releases from Microsoft will be 64 bit only. From this point on Microsoft will no longer ship a 32 bit server OS.

One of the more interesting things I found in the Windows 2008 R2 reviewer’s guide is some new features in Remote Desktop:

• Multimedia Redirection: Provides high-quality multimedia by redirecting multimedia files and streams so that audio and video content is sent in its original format from the server to the client and rendered using the client’s local media playback capabilities.

• True multiple monitor support: Enables support for up to 10 monitors in almost any size, resolution or layout with RemoteApp and remote desktops; applications will behave just like they do when running locally in multi-monitor configurations.

• Audio Input & Recording: VDI supports any microphone connected to a user’s local machine, enables audio recording support for RemoteApp and Remote Desktop. This is useful for VoIP scenarios and also enables speech recognition.

• Aero Glass support: VDI provides users with the ability to use the AeroGlass UI for client desktops; ensuring that remote desktop sessions look and feel like local desktop sessions.

• Direct X redirection: DirectX 9, 10 and 11 applications will render on the server and will be remoted using bitmaps (requiring Direct3D-compatible hardware). If the application supports the new DirectX 10.1 API with remoting extensions the DirectX (2D& 3D) graphics are redirected to the local client to harness the power of the GPU on the user’s local device, removing the need for a GPU on the server.

• Improved audio/video synchronization: RDP improvements in Windows Server 2008 R2 are designed to provide closer synchronization of audio and video in most scenarios.

• Language Bar Redirection: Users can easily and seamlessly control the language setting (e.g. right to left) for RemoteApp programs using the local language bar.

• Task Scheduler: This adds the ability in Task Scheduler to ensure that scheduled applications never appear to users connecting with RemoteApp. This reduces user confusion.

Those are some nice updates, but the most interesting feature described in this document is the new RemoteApp and Desktop Web access.

It promises to:

“ensure a consistent list of applications is available to the user at all times, no matter the desktop OS used. The default web page provides a fresh and inviting look and feel and includes a new Web-based login with integrated single sign-on.”

Hmm. No matter what OS is used. This little line of text means a lot to me. Currently the web based login is just a glorified link to the RDP client. It has a page with an embedded ActiveX control. If what they say is true, and any operating system is supported, it means they have designed a web-friendly way to connect to a machine - without using ActiveX.

This will be one of the first things I check out when I get my hands on a copy of 2008 R2.

The noise about Windows 7 is growing. If you haven’t heard, Windows 7 is the next version of Windows. Microsoft has said that it will be released fourth quarter 2009.

If Windows Vista is the Windows ME of the new millennium, then Windows 7 should be the Windows XP. If you have ever used Windows ME you will know what I mean. I have done some research to find out what the 5 biggest features will be

1. Sensors - Windows 7 will have context-aware support through a new sensors API. For example, a location sensor can tell where your computer is, and applications that know about this can take advantage of this. My tin-foil hat is starting to spin on this one. Still sounds like a cool feature

2. Accelerators - These should really be called specialized shortcuts. Here is aan example of how accelerators work. Anywhere within Windows you can select text, or speak commands through a microphone, and windows will take action. A few that are built into IE 8 already would include: ‘Define with Encarta’, ‘Email with Live Mail’, and ‘Search with Live Search’.

3. HomeGroup Networking - This part of windows will do many of the same things that Network Magic does right now. Essentially it simplifies the process of setting up your home network.

4. Improved Explorer Windows Explorer will be updated with many new features. A resizeable search box, a simpler toolbar, and a new view style called content. The content view style is a preview mode for images and other things like PDF files, and word documents.

5. UAC Improvements - The favorite feature of Vista (Just kidding). Microsoft has totally reworked this to make it more customizable. Four different levels of UAC notification will be available:

1. Never Notify- The user is never notified when a program tries to install software, or make changes to the computer.

2. Only notify me when programs make changes - The user is not notified when software is installed, only when programs try to make changes to the computer and windows settings.

3. Always notify - The user is prompted when a programs try to install software or make changes to the computer.

4. Always notify me and wait for response - The user is notified when a program tries to install software, or make changes to the computer, and Windows will wait for the response.

All of these are a welcome change. I can’t wait to get my hands on the first public beta.

We have been working on various test systems here, and sometimes we use the wrong serial number for Office 2007 (One that we have on other systems that are used for work instead of testing). I only figure this after I have installed the whole package.

I wanted to find a way of simply entering a new serial number after the fact.

I researched to see if there was a way to update it without the reinstall…and it turns out it is actually not too hard.

You simply need to drill down to this registry key (As always backup your registry before messing with it):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0
\Registration\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

If you see more than one GUID, and it does not match the one above…Look through each until you find one with the ProductName of Microsoft Office 2007

Once you find the appropriate registry key look for the two values ProductID, and DigitalProductID? Delete these.

Now run launch any office application, and you will be prompted for the new serial number.

Now you can update the serial without waiting through a re-install.

Microsoft has announced that they will be releasing an emergency out of cycle patch for Windows users today.

There are few details on why it is releasing the patch, but a little research shows that it is a flaw in SMB - Windows File Sharing. The update will be released at 10 A.M. Pacific time, as announced on the Microsoft Security blog.

If you take a peek over at the National Vulnerability Database, we can see this article Here is the overview:

Buffer underflow in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, and Server 2008 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Server Message Block (SMB) request that contains a filename with a crafted length, aka “SMB Buffer Underflow Vulnerability.”

This means this vulnerability could be exploited to create a worm. Further it means if one PC gets infected on your network, then quickly all of them will.

After doing some more research it seems there is already an exploit in the wild - it is set to “go off” during the Thanksgiving holiday here in the states.

This is a very serious vulnerability and I suggest making sure your computers are updated with the patch as soon as possible.

We are now opening the beta to the general public. If you don’t know already, our Remote Control 3.0 is in beta, and has a few interesting features:

-256 bit AES encryption

-Request Access before connecting

-Support for Vista, 2008 and 64 bit windows

-Support for third party VNC clients like RealVNC, UltraVNC, and TightVNC.

To Get the download, simply use this form to get into the beta site:

http://www.intelliadmin.com/beta/signup.asp

The VNC support is a “clean-room” implementation of the RFB protocol. This means we took the public information about VNC provided by this document.

We carefully designed it with security, performance, and modern operating system support in mind. Since we built ours from scratch our remote control will be unlike many other VNC compatible servers - it won’t have the same quirks and bugs as RealVNC - We will just have our own quirks and bugs!

Since the release of Windows XP SP2 file and printer sharing has been blocked by default in the Windows firewall.

This creates a problem for many of our tools and products. For example, our remote USB disabler cannot do its work without remotely writing the appropriate registry keys. Our Remote Control product cannot automatically install its agent without file and printer sharing. They all use this to do their magic. We are not the only ones - psexec from SysInternals needs file and printer sharing too.

There are hundreds if not thousands of tools used by IT administrators that require file and printer sharing enabled in the firewall.

If you have 10 computers it is an easy fix. You simply walk around to each of them and add an exception in the firewall. Simple. Done.

If you have 100s of computers spread across 3 states…you now have a much more difficult problem. You could write a script that executes at login. The trouble with this idea is that every user would need full administrator access to their own machine. This type of access is getting pretty rare these days, so I don’t even consider it an option.

The best method is group policy. I am going to walk you through it. My example uses Windows 2003 Server. Those of you with 2008 will find that it is almost exactly the same. If you have 2000 Server…well…you have your hands full anyway and shouldn’t even have time to read this article.

Start out by getting on your domain controller. Open “Active Directory Users and Computers”. You need to determine what group of machines your policy is going to be applied to. Some organizations will have computers under many different OUs.

To keep things simple I am going to change the group policy for the entire domain.

Right click on the domain name and go to properties:

This will bring up a properties window. You will want to move to the Group Policy tab, select the policy you want to edit (In our case it is the Default Domain Policy) and press the edit button.

This is a computer policy (It will apply to computers…not specific users), so drill down to:

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Connections -> Windows Firewall

You will notice two sections under this area. A domain profile, and a standard profile. A machine will automatically determine which profile it should use by the type of network it is connected to. Directly from Microsoft, they are defined in this way:

* Domain profile The domain profile is the set of Windows Firewall settings that are needed when the computer is connected to the managed network. For example, the domain profile might contain settings for excepted traffic for the applications and services needed by a managed computer in an enterprise network.

* Standard profile The standard profile is the set of Windows Firewall settings that are needed when the computer is connected to another network. A good example is when an organization laptop computer is taken on the road and connects to the Internet using a public broadband or wireless Internet service provider. Because the organization laptop computer is directly connected to the Internet, the standard profile should contain more restrictive settings than the domain profile.

So generally speaking, I suggest only making these changes to the Domain Profile. You don’t want your sales guys hooking up to a hotel network with their file and printer sharing fully accessible.

Selecting the domain profile, and looking on the right we see what we need - “Windows Firewall: Allow file and printer sharing exception”

There are two items you need to set. First check the radio button to enabled, and then below you need to fill out a filter value. This tells the group policy what computers are allowed to connect to the machine. For our example I will put *

This value allows any computer to connect. Click OK, and allow some time to pass (15 to 30 minutes). Then your computers will pick up the new policy. If you are impatient you can go to the command line on the server and your test machine. Type: GPUPDATE /force

If I hop on one of my Vista machines we can see that it has accepted the policy:

Perfect. Now I can terrorize my programmers by rebooting all of their machines at the same time using Network Administrator

We have many test systems here. Ranging from Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP Home, to Windows 2008 x64. Something I noticed today while testing…when I tried to connect to some Windows 2000 machines - the remote computer would not accept my password:

I happened to be working from a Vista Ultimate machine. So I went over to one of our XP Pro installs - it worked fine. The more testing I did, I realized it only happened with machines that were Windows 2000

Immediately I remembered that there were different levels of NTLM authentication, I thought that Vista might be enforcing a higher level through security policy.

On my Vista machine I opened the local policy editor (You can find this under administrative tools in the control panel).

Drilled down to Local Policies -> Security Options

Looking at:

Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level

I see that it only will allow NTLMv2 responses. Since I know that my physical network is protected, and I know all of the machines running on it I changed it to this:

Now I can connect to the admin$ share…and any other share on Windows 2000 computers.

This tip comes with a warning. Obviously dropping this down makes your Vista install less secure. If you think it is possible that you could have a rogue SMB server (A specially crafted windows share) on your network, I suggest not changing this. setting.

2. It allows you to request access before connecting to a machine

3. It works over the internet now…and only one TCP port is needed.

If you haven’t noticed…it has been very quiet here. It is because we have been fighting with a performance issue within the new Remote Control LAN edition beta. For almost three months we have been combing through the code and updating the most performance intensive sections. In some cases we used assembly language to eek out every bit of speed we could.

Many of you have signed up for the beta, and your input has been tremendously helpful. It has been almost a month since we posted a beta for download, and this was because we needed to re-write a major section of the agent to get the performance we were looking for. I will tell you right now…it was worth the trouble.

This one particular Vista machine would show about 15% constant CPU time…and sluggish response on the remote side. After our changes:

Yep. Zero. Now…this is a decent system. Our old laptop from 1999 with Windows XP…still shows about 8%, but still very snappy.

This means we can start moving forward. We have overshot our original release date by many months, so this means to get a final version out soon we will need to cut back on proposed features.

Next Wednesday, October 1st, we will be releasing a major beta. It will be near a production level release. It will have all of the current features of 2.8, plus:

-It will be Vista, 2008, and x64 Compatible

-Users will have the ability to show a “An Administrator is connected” window at all times

-Users will be able to request for permission before connecting

I know some of you will be disappointed that many of the features shown before will not make it into this release - not to worry. Part of our team will still be moving forward at full pace to get those finished. In the meantime we can get a 3.0 out soon that will allow customers to connect to their 2008, and Vista machines.

If you are not a member of the beta program, or we missed your last request to be a member (Sorry)…send an email to support@intelliadmin.com and just put beta in the subject.

If you have a machine that is locking up, freezing, or blue-screening…you may want to check out this utility from Microsoft. It is called “Windows Memory Diagnostic”. It is a program that will run a variety of tests on your hardware and make sure that there are no issues with your memory.

It does not require an install. You simple download the main application from here

This simple download will create a boot floppy, or an ISO image that you can burn to a CD.

When the program boots it will immediately begin scanning your memory. The default is standard mode, which includes six different tests. Each uses a different algorithm to scan for different types of problems and errors. It will show its progress as it is completing each test. (Notice I have highlighted the test count in the screenshot)

Alternatively you can use the extended mode, which runs 11 different tests. After each test completes it will show you a success or failed message - if a test fails it will give you detailed information about what the issue was.

It will continue to loop through all of the tests until you exit the program.

The only limitation to the software is that it cannot scan more than 4 GB of RAM.

It is the perfect tool when building your own systems. I usually run it for 24 hours after putting a box together.
